Target Information
NEK4 is a serine/threonine kinase involved in signal transduction and cellular communication. It acts primarily on threonine residues and is expressed in most primary carcinomas. Protein kinases transfer phosphate groups from ATP to substrate proteins, mediating signal transduction and regulating processes such as metabolism, transcription, cell cycle progression, cytoskeletal rearrangement, cell movement, apoptosis, and differentiation.
The protein kinase family includes over 500 gene products, classified into 8 major groups based on catalytic domain sequence comparison. The STE group (homologs of yeast Sterile 7, 11, 20 kinases) comprises approximately 50 kinases related to the MAPK cascade families (Ste7/MAP2K, Ste11/MAP3K, Ste20/MAP4K). MAPK cascades are well characterized in yeast pheromone response pathways, where pheromones bind to Ste receptors and activate the MAPK pathway.
