Target Information
NEK4 is a serine/threonine kinase involved in signal transduction and cellular communication. It acts primarily on threonine residues and is present in most primary carcinomas.
Protein kinases catalyze the transfer of phosphate groups from ATP to substrate proteins, mediating signal transduction and regulating cellular functions such as metabolism, transcription, cell cycle, cytoskeletal rearrangement, apoptosis, and differentiation.
The protein kinase family includes over 500 gene products and is divided into eight major groups based on sequence similarity of their catalytic domains. The STE group (homologs of yeast Sterile 7, 11, 20 kinases) includes kinases related to MAPK cascade families (Ste7/MAP2K, Ste11/MAP3K, and Ste20/MAP4K). MAP kinase cascades are well characterized in the yeast pheromone response pathway, where pheromones activate surface receptors and trigger MAPK signaling.
