Target Information
NEK4 is a serine/threonine kinase involved in signal transduction and cellular communication. It acts primarily on threonine residues and is present in most primary carcinomas. Protein kinases transfer phosphate groups from ATP to substrate proteins, regulating key cellular processes such as metabolism, transcription, cell cycle progression, cytoskeletal rearrangement, apoptosis, and differentiation.
The protein kinase family includes over 500 gene products, classified into 8 major groups based on catalytic domain sequence comparison. The STE group (homologs of yeast Sterile 7, 11, 20 kinases) includes kinases related to MAPK cascade families (Ste7/MAP2K, Ste11/MAP3K, Ste20/MAP4K), which are central to signal transduction pathways such as the yeast pheromone response pathway.
