Background
Calcium-binding proteins are key components of calcium-mediated cellular signal transduction. The CABP1 gene encodes a protein belonging to a subfamily of calcium-binding proteins similar to calmodulin. This protein regulates the gating of voltage-gated calcium ion channels, inhibits calcium-dependent inactivation, and supports calcium-dependent facilitation of L-type calcium channels (α1C subunit). It also modulates calcium-dependent activity of inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptors, P/Q-type voltage-gated calcium channels, and TRPC5 channels. CABP1 is predominantly expressed in the retina and brain. Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms with distinct localization and functions.
