Background
Glutamate receptors are predominant excitatory neurotransmitter receptors in the mammalian brain and are activated in various normal neurophysiologic processes. These receptors are heteromeric protein complexes with multiple subunits forming ligand-gated ion channels. Glutamate receptors are classified based on activation by different pharmacologic agonists. This gene belongs to the AMPA receptor family (alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate). Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
