Background
Potassium calcium-activated channel subfamily N member 2 (KCNN2) is a human gene encoding a protein involved in regulating neuronal excitability. In vertebrate neurons, action potentials are followed by an afterhyperpolarization (AHP) that can last for several seconds, influencing neuronal firing patterns. Each AHP component is mediated by distinct calcium-activated potassium channels. The KCNN2-encoded protein contributes to the slow component of synaptic AHP and forms a voltage-independent, calcium-activated channel with calmodulin-binding subunits. This gene belongs to the KCNN family, and alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. (RefSeq, May 2013)
