Background
This gene encodes an aspartic proteinase belonging to the peptidase family A1. The encoded protein is a digestive enzyme produced in the stomach and is a major component of the gastric mucosa. It is also secreted into the serum and synthesized as an inactive zymogen containing a highly basic prosegment. Activation occurs at low pH through self-cleavage of the prosegment. Polymorphisms in this gene are associated with susceptibility to gastric cancers. Serum levels serve as biomarkers for gastric diseases, including Helicobacter pylori-related gastritis. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants, and a pseudogene of this gene exists on chromosome 1. (RefSeq, Oct 2009)
