Background
Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for the nucleosome structure of chromosomal fibers in eukaryotes. Each nucleosome consists of approximately 146 bp of DNA wrapped around an octamer composed of pairs of the four core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4). The chromatin fiber is further compacted by interaction with linker histone H1, forming higher-order chromatin structures. This gene encodes a replication-dependent histone H3 family member, located in the large histone gene cluster on chromosome 6p22-p21.3. Transcripts from this gene lack polyA tails and contain a palindromic termination element. (RefSeq, Aug 2015)
