Target Information

GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) is a class III intermediate filament protein predominantly expressed in astrocytes and certain glial cells of the central nervous system. It serves as a key marker for astrocytic cells and is also expressed in neural stem cells, satellite cells, and non-myelinating Schwann cells. GFAP expression is observed in various brain tumors derived from astrocytic cells, as well as in lens epithelium, Kupffer cells, and some salivary gland tumors. Mutations in the GFAP gene are associated with Alexander disease, a rare astrocytic disorder. Multiple isoforms are produced through alternative splicing.
