Target Information

GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) belongs to the class III intermediate filament family. It is specifically expressed in astrocytes and certain astroglia of the central nervous system, satellite cells of peripheral ganglia, and non-myelinating Schwann cells of peripheral nerves. Neural stem cells also strongly express GFAP.
GFAP antibodies serve as markers for astrocytic cells and are valuable in brain tumor research, as many astrocyte-derived tumors express GFAP. Additionally, GFAP is found in lens epithelium, Kupffer cells, salivary tumors, and erythrocytes.
GFAP is used to distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development. Mutations in this gene cause Alexander disease, a rare astrocytic disorder. Alternative splicing leads to multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.

For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures. Not for resale without express authorization.
