Human CD81 is a member of the tetraspanin family of leukocyte surface molecules involved in signal transduction, cell-cell adhesion, and cellular activation.
CD81 acts as a receptor for the envelope protein E2 of chronic hepatitis C virus and is expressed on a wide variety of leukocytes.

Target Information

CD81 (TAPA-1) belongs to the tetraspanin family and is expressed on most nucleated cells, especially germinal center B cells.
It forms complexes with other tetraspanins, integrins, coreceptors, and MHC molecules, influencing adhesion, activation, proliferation, and differentiation of B and T cells.
In muscle cells, CD81 promotes cell fusion and myotube maintenance.
CD81 serves as a receptor for hepatitis C virus and is associated with tumor-suppressor regions, making it a candidate gene for malignancy studies.
Antibodies against CD81 exhibit anti-proliferative effects on lymphoid cell lines, particularly large cell lymphomas.
