Target Information

HMG-box protein-1 (HBP1) is a transcription factor belonging to the HMG family, characterized by a conserved high mobility group (HMG) 1 box that mediates DNA binding.
HBP1 interacts with tumor suppressor proteins Rb and p130, initiating cell cycle arrest. This arrest is required for terminal cell differentiation, which is followed by the expression of tissue-specific genes.

Continued HBP1 activity can suppress tissue-specific gene expression by associating with MyoD proteins. In muscle differentiation, the MyoD family (Myf5, MyoD, myogenin) induces expression of cell-type specific proteins and contributes to phenotype development. Proper differentiation progression depends on decreased HBP1 activity and activation of MyoD-induced transcription.
