PLK1은 세린/트레오닌 키나아제로, 세포 분열 과정에서 중요한 역할을 하며 세포 증식의 지표로 간주됩니다. 또한 암 발생과정에서 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. Polo-like kinase 단백질은 특정 모티프를 인식하는 POLO box domain을 통해 이미 인산화된 단백질에 결합하고 인산화를 촉진합니다. PLK1은 다양한 단백질(BORA, BUB1B/BUBR1, CCNB1, CDC25C, CEP55, ECT2 등)을 인산화하며, 중심체 기능과 양극성 방추체 형성에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
