Target Information
This gene encodes the peroxisomal enzyme D-amino acid oxidase (DAO). The enzyme is a flavoprotein that uses flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) as its prosthetic group. It acts on various D-amino acids but is inactive on naturally occurring L-amino acids. Its biological function may involve detoxification of D-amino acids accumulated during aging. In mice, DAO degrades D-serine, a co-agonist of the NMDA receptor, and may be linked to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.
