Target Information
This gene encodes the peroxisomal enzyme D-amino acid oxidase (DAO). The enzyme is a flavoprotein using flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) as its prosthetic group. It acts on various D-amino acids but is inactive on L-amino acids. Its biological function may involve detoxification of D-amino acids that accumulate during aging. In mice, it degrades D-serine, a co-agonist of the NMDA receptor. The gene may play a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.
