Target Information

CD83 cell surface antigen is a 40–45 kDa glycoprotein expressed by peripheral blood dendritic cells. Peripheral lymphocytes can express low levels of CD83 after stimulation with agents such as Con A or PHA. In immunohistology, CD83 is strongly expressed by interfollicular interdigitating reticulum cells and weakly by cells within germinal centers. It is also expressed by Langerhans cells in the skin.

The CD83 antigen is a 186-amino-acid single-chain glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily, composed of an extracellular V-type Ig-like domain, a transmembrane region, and a short cytoplasmic tail. It undergoes extensive post-translational glycosylation, making its apparent molecular weight approximately twice that of the core protein.

CD83+ cells have a unique surface immunophenotype distinct from T cells, B cells, NK cells, or myelomonocytic cells. They coexpress high levels of MHC class II molecules and various lineage markers, including CD2, CD5, CD40, CD78, CD13, CD33, and CD36. CD83 dysfunction has been associated with diseases such as plague and Rift Valley Fever.
