Target Information

The cytochrome c oxidase (COX) family of proteins functions as the final electron donor in the respiratory chain to drive a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane, resulting in the production of water.
The mammalian COX apoenzyme is a dimer with 13 subunits per monomer, encoded by both mitochondrial and nuclear genes.

COX15 (cytochrome c oxidase assembly protein COX15 homolog) is a 410 amino acid multi-pass mitochondrial membrane protein of the COX15/ctaA family. It exists as two alternatively spliced isoforms and is highly expressed in tissues with elevated oxidative phosphorylation activity such as brain, heart, and muscle.

Defects in COX15 are associated with Leigh syndrome and cytochrome c oxidase deficiency (COX deficiency).
