Target Information
Erythropoietin (EPO) protein is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors.
EPO induces the final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and promotes production of red cell-specific proteins such as hemoglobin.
The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed on precursor cells and decreases with maturation.
In the fetus, hepatocytes are the main source of EPO, while in adults, kidney interstitial cells are predominant.
EPO expression increases under hypoxic conditions and has also been detected at low levels in lung and brain tissue.
Recent data suggest EPO may play a role in neuronal protection and tissue repair.
