모든 진핵세포 mRNA는 5' 말단에 7-methylguanosine 캡 구조(m7GpppX)를 가지고 있으며, eIF4E는 이 캡 구조에 리보솜을 유도하는 번역 개시 인자입니다.
이 단백질은 24 kDa 폴리펩타이드로, 자유형 또는 EIF4F 복합체의 일부로 존재합니다. EIF4E는 번역 과정에서 속도 제한 요소로 작용하며, mRNA-리보솜 결합 단계에 관여합니다.
EIF4F의 다른 서브유닛에는 ATPase 및 RNA 헬리케이스 활성을 가진 EIF4A(50 kDa)와 EIF4G(220 kDa)가 포함됩니다.
