Target Information
In response to adverse environmental changes, cells increase the expression of heat shock or stress proteins.
HSPB1 (heat shock protein beta-1 or HSP27) is a small heat shock protein functioning as a molecular chaperone, maintaining denatured proteins in a folding-competent state.
It plays roles in stress resistance and actin organization, and regulates biological processes such as phosphorylation and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins.
Mutations in this gene can result in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy 2B.
