Target Information

AQP0 is the most abundant endogenous protein in the plasma membrane of lens fiber cells. It functions as both a water pore and a structural component involved in fiber-fiber adhesion, essential for lens organization.
AQP0 possesses a unique pore constriction responsible for gating, holding only three water molecules that are too far apart to form hydrogen bonds.
The C-terminal domain undergoes extensive post-translational modifications, including truncations during lens aging due to m-calpain and other proteolytic or non-enzymatic mechanisms. These modifications may contribute to cataract formation.
