G protein-coupled receptors (GPRs) are a protein family of transmembrane receptors that transmit extracellular signals (ligand binding) into intracellular signals (G protein activation).
GPR signaling is an evolutionarily ancient mechanism used by eukaryotes to sense environmental stimuli and mediate cell-cell communication.
All GPRs have seven membrane-spanning domains, and their extracellular parts can be glycosylated. These loops contain two conserved cysteine residues forming disulfide bonds to stabilize receptor structure.
GPR103 is a 455-amino-acid protein highly expressed in the brain, retina, trigeminal ganglion, hypothalamus, and vestibular nucleus. In peripheral tissues, expression occurs in the heart, kidney, and testis.
GPR103 may regulate adrenal function, and the hypothalamic neuropeptide 26RFa acts as its endogenous ligand.
