Target Information
The adenylate kinases (AK) are a family of structurally and functionally related enzymes that catalyze the reaction:
MgNTP + AMP → MgNDP + ADP (N = A or G)
These enzymes are essential for maintaining homeostasis of adenine and guanine nucleotide pools.
- AK1: Cytosolic enzyme using ATP as substrate
- AK2: Localized in mitochondrial intermembrane space, catalyzes same reaction as AK1
- AK3: Present in mitochondrial matrix, prefers GTP over ATP
