이 단클론 항체는 Cytokeratin 5/6에 반응하며, Cytokeratin 4에는 약하게 반응합니다.
Squamous 및 glandular epithelia의 기저세포, squamous epithelium의 stratum spinosum 일부, myoepithelium 및 mesothelium을 염색합니다.
Adenous epithelium은 염색하지 않으므로, squamous carcinoma와 adenocarcinoma를 구분하거나 epithelioid mesothelioma와 non-epithelioid mesothelioma 및 adenocarcinoma를 감별하는 데 유용합니다.
또한, 양성 ductal hyperplasia와 비침습성 종양성 증식을 구분하는 데 활용 가능합니다.

이 단백질은 keratin 유전자군에 속하며, type II cytokeratin은 기본 또는 중성 단백질로 구성되어 있습니다.

본 type II cytokeratin은 KRT14와 함께 표피의 기저층에서 특이적으로 발현되며, 해당 유전자 변이는 epidermolysis bullosa simplex와 관련된 질환 복합체와 연관되어 있습니다.
