Target Information
Azurocidin, also known as heparin-binding protein (HBP), is an inactive homolog of serine proteinases found in granulocytes. Initially identified for its activity against gram-negative bacteria, it also acts against gram-positive bacteria and Candida albicans.
It belongs to the family of polymorphonuclear leukocyte-derived antimicrobial proteins such as defensins, LL-37, and lysozyme.
Azurocidin plays a key role in immune response activation and modulation. Its cationic domain is essential for antimicrobial activity. Stored in azurophil and secretory granules, it is released early during extravasation.
Functions include chemotaxis and activation of monocytes, cytokine release, and phagocytosis, enhancing bacterial clearance.
Primary targets include endothelial cells and extravascular tissues, interacting with leukocytes via β2-integrins. Elevated plasma levels of azurocidin may indicate risk of sepsis development.
For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures. Not for resale without express authorization.
