Cathepsin A는 serine carboxypeptidase로서, β-galactosidase (β-gal) 및 α-neuraminidase (Neu1)와 함께 고분자량 리소좀 복합체를 형성하여 이들을 리소좀 내 단백질분해로부터 보호합니다.
Cathepsin A 결핍은 β-gal 및 Neu1 결핍을 초래하며, 인간 Cathepsin A 유전자는 chromosome 20q13.12에 위치합니다.
이 유전자 변이는 galactosialidosis, 즉 β-gal 및 Neu1 결핍으로 인한 리소좀 저장 질환을 유발합니다.
