Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins with roles in excitable and non-excitable cells. The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K+) is unique in being controlled by both intracellular calcium and membrane depolarization.
The Maxi K+ alpha homotetramer contains a voltage sensor and calcium binding domain. In vascular smooth muscle, a beta-subunit associates in a 1:1 ratio, reducing the calcium concentration required for activation by 5–10 fold.
The Maxi K+ beta-subunit is a potential therapeutic target due to its involvement in blood flow and blood pressure regulation.
