Target Information

The cathepsin family of proteolytic enzymes includes several protease classes:

• Cysteine proteases: Cathepsins B, L, H, K, S, O
• Aspartyl proteases: Cathepsins D, E
• Serine protease: Cathepsin G

Most cathepsins are lysosomal and participate in cellular metabolism, peptide biosynthesis, and protein degradation.
Cathepsin O retains the structural features of cysteine proteinases, including the active site cysteine residue involved in covalent intermediate formation during peptide hydrolysis. It functions as an endoproteinase that may contribute to extracellular matrix degradation.
Expression is abundant in ovary, kidney, and placenta, with lower levels in thymus and skeletal muscle.
