Target Information
Selenium is associated with cancer prevention, immune function, male fertility, cardiovascular health, aging, and neurodegenerative processes. Selenoproteins mediate many of these effects, with approximately 17 identified to date. While the functions of many remain unknown, several play roles in antioxidant defense and thiol/disulfide exchange regulation.
Selenoprotein M (SelM) is primarily expressed in the mammalian brain and localized to perinuclear structures (Golgi/ER). The precise roles of SelM are still under investigation.
