Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of proteins, which are highly conserved proteins involved in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
Alpha actin is a major constituent of the contractile apparatus, while beta and gamma actins regulate cell motility.
Smooth muscle actin, an alpha actin, is found in skeletal and smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells.
Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene can cause familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6.
Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and appears in stress fibers of fibroblastic cells during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases.
Multiple alternatively spliced variants of smooth muscle actin have been identified.
