Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X (BCL2L1) gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in various cellular activities.
These proteins are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate mitochondrial membrane channel (VDAC) opening, which influences mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release—key in apoptosis induction.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms:
- Longer isoform: Apoptotic inhibitor
- Shorter isoform: Apoptotic activator
