Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of proteins, which are highly conserved and play crucial roles in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified:
- Alpha-actin: major constituent of the contractile apparatus
- Beta and gamma actins: involved in cell motility regulation
Smooth muscle actin (alpha-actin) is found in smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells of breast and salivary glands.
Actin filaments interact with myosin to assist in muscle contraction and cell motility.
Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene can cause familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6.
Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and also appears in fibroblastic cells during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases.
