Target Information

IL-1 alpha (Interleukin-1 alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is coded by the IL1A gene and signals through two receptors, IL-1RI and IL-1RII, shared with IL-1 beta.
IL1A is located on chromosome 2q13 and plays a critical role in innate host defense by triggering production of other proinflammatory cytokines and initiating acute-phase responses.
IL-1 alpha activity can be moderated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA), which blocks receptor binding via competitive inhibition.
This cytokine is involved in immune responses, inflammation, and hematopoiesis, produced as a proprotein by monocytes and macrophages, processed and released upon cell injury, inducing apoptosis.
The IL1A gene forms part of a cytokine gene cluster with eight other interleukin 1 family genes on chromosome 2.
IL-1 alpha regulates NF-kappaB and MAPK activities, stimulates IL6 and COX-2 (PTGS2) expression, and enhances nitric oxide (NO) production.
Elevated IL-1 alpha levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.
