Target Information

IL-1 alpha (Interleukin-1 alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is encoded by the IL1A gene and signals through two receptors, IL-1RI and IL-1RII, shared with IL-1 beta.
The IL1A gene is located on chromosome 2q13 and plays a key role in innate host defense by inducing proinflammatory cytokines and acute-phase responses.
IL-1 alpha activity is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA), which blocks receptor binding through competitive inhibition.
It is a pleiotropic cytokine involved in immune responses, inflammation, and hematopoiesis. Produced as a proprotein by monocytes and macrophages, IL-1 alpha is processed and released upon cell injury, inducing apoptosis.
The IL1A gene belongs to a cytokine gene cluster on chromosome 2, regulating NF-kappaB and MAP kinase pathways, and stimulating IL6, COX-2 (PTGS2), and nitric oxide (NO) production.
Elevated IL-1 alpha levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.
