Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for mitochondrial protein synthesis.
Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes.
Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA.
MRPL27 encodes a 39S subunit protein involved in mitochondrial translation.
