Ep-CAM (epithelial adhesion molecule, epithelial specific antigen, ESA)은 약 40 kDa의 분자량을 가지는 상피세포막 당단백질로, 상피세포 부착에 관여합니다.
Ep-CAM은 칼슘 비의존적 상동성 세포 부착을 매개하며, proto-oncogene c-myc 및 세포주기 조절 유전자 cyclin A, E의 발현을 유도하여 상피세포 및 섬유아세포의 증식과 대사에 영향을 미칩니다.
Ep-CAM의 과발현은 상피세포 증식 증가와 관련이 있으며, 인간 암종에서 높게 발현되어 상피성 종양의 마커로 사용됩니다.
Ep-CAM은 대부분의 단순 상피와 다양한 암종에서 기저-측면 세포 표면에 발현되며, adenocarcinoma와 pleural mesothelioma를 구분하는 데 유용한 표지자로 보고되었습니다.
