Target Information

The P2X1 receptor belongs to the family of purinoceptors for ATP and functions as a ligand-gated ion channel with high calcium permeability. It mediates synaptic transmission between neurons and smooth muscle, contributing to sympathetic vasoconstriction in small arteries, arterioles, and vas deferens. Mouse studies indicate its essential role in male reproductive function. Selective antagonists targeting this receptor may provide a potential non-hormonal male contraceptive approach.
