This antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of CD86 (B7-2), a 70–80 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin supergene family, expressed on professional antigen-presenting cells such as dendritic cells, macrophages, or activated B lymphocytes.
Target Information
CD86 is one of two ligands (the other being CD80) for CTLA4 and CD28. It functions as a costimulatory molecule in T-cell activation during antigen presentation. Insufficient co-stimulation involving CD86/CD80 can induce tolerance. CD86 is expressed by antigen-presenting cells and binds to CD28 and CTLA4 on T cells, providing activation or inhibitory signals respectively. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. CD86 dysfunction has been associated with diseases such as gallbladder squamous cell carcinoma and myocarditis.
