Target Information
The AGT gene encodes pre-angiotensinogen (angiotensinogen precursor), primarily expressed in the liver. It is cleaved by renin in response to low blood pressure to form angiotensin I, which is further processed by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) into angiotensin II, an active regulator of blood pressure.
This protein is involved in maintaining blood pressure and is linked to essential hypertension and preeclampsia. Mutations can cause renal tubular dysgenesis and are associated with structural atrial fibrillation and inflammatory bowel disease.
