Target Information
The AGT gene encodes pre-angiotensinogen (angiotensinogen precursor), primarily expressed in the liver. It is cleaved by renin in response to lowered blood pressure to produce angiotensin I, which is further processed by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) into angiotensin II, a key regulator of blood pressure. This protein is involved in maintaining blood pressure and is associated with essential hypertension and preeclampsia. Mutations can lead to renal tubular dysgenesis and have been linked to atrial fibrillation and inflammatory bowel disease.
