Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. The mammalian mitoribosome lacks 5S rRNA and varies significantly among species in protein sequence and biochemical properties.
The DAP3 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein involved in apoptotic pathways initiated by TNF-α, Fas ligand, and interferon-γ. This protein may bind ATP/GTP and interact with mitoribosomal protein S27. Splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR encode the same protein, and pseudogenes exist on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
