Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein with high sequence similarity to ribosomal protein S11P family members. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 20, and multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
