Target Information
Beta-defensins (BDs or hBDs in humans) are small cationic peptides with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against viruses, fungi, and bacteria. They are produced in mucosal epithelia and neutrophils and are developmentally regulated. Beta-defensin proteins share a conserved defensin motif with multiple cysteine residues and a stable tertiary structure.
Beyond their role in host immune defense, many beta-defensins contribute to sperm maturation and capacitation. Beta-defensin 121 is a 76-amino acid secreted protein likely containing a signal peptide requiring proteolytic cleavage for activation. It is highly expressed in the epididymal caput and corpus, with low expression in testis, and is not regulated by androgens.
