Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins (MRPs) are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio (~75%) compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPS9 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 2p and 17q.
