Target Information
Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF) is involved in chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation during apoptosis.
AIF localizes to mitochondria and translocates to the nucleus upon induction of apoptosis, promoting the release of apoptogenic proteins such as cytochrome c and caspase-9.
It induces characteristic apoptotic nuclear changes, including chromatin condensation and large-scale DNA fragmentation.
AIF is highly conserved between human and mouse and is widely expressed.
Mutations in the AIF gene are associated with combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 6, leading to severe mitochondrial encephalomyopathy.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, and a related pseudogene is located on chromosome 10.
