Target Information

Apoptosis-Inducing Factor (AIF) is involved in chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation during apoptosis. AIF localizes in mitochondria and translocates to the nucleus upon induction of apoptosis, promoting the release of apoptogenic proteins such as cytochrome c and caspase-9. It is highly conserved between human and mouse and widely expressed. Mutations in the AIF gene cause combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 6, leading to severe mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, and a related pseudogene is identified on chromosome 10.
