Target Information
The ABCG5 gene encodes a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily, which transports various molecules across cellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
ABCG5 belongs to the White subfamily and functions as a half-transporter that limits intestinal absorption and promotes biliary excretion of sterols. It is expressed in the liver, colon, and intestine.
This gene is tandemly arrayed with ABCG8 on chromosome 2. Mutations in ABCG5 can lead to sterol accumulation and atherosclerosis, and are associated with sitosterolemia.
