Target Information
Hemidesmosomes are structures that link the basal lamina to the intermediate filament cytoskeleton.
An important component of hemidesmosomes is the integrin beta-4 subunit (ITGB4), containing two fibronectin type III domains.
The protein encoded by the eIF6 gene binds to these domains and may help link ITGB4 to the intermediate filament cytoskeleton.
This protein is insoluble, localized in both the nucleus and cytoplasm, functions as a translation initiation factor, and prevents association of the 40S and 60S ribosomal subunits.
Multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms have been identified.
