Target Information
Interferon alpha (IFN alpha) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found only in vertebrates. Interaction of IFN-alpha with its receptor components activates several signaling pathways involved in the innate immune response against viral infection.
In humans, the IFN alpha gene is located on chromosome 9. Type I interferons include 14 different alpha isoforms, and single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules are also present in many mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
IFN alpha is primarily produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells and plays a key role in antiviral defense and modulation of adaptive immunity. Dysfunction of IFN alpha is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
