Target Information

AXL is a chronic myelogenous leukemia-associated oncogene also linked to colon cancer and melanoma. It encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase that transduces extracellular signals into the cytoplasm by binding growth factors such as GAS6. AXL is involved in cell proliferation and apoptotic cell clearance. Mice lacking TAM receptors exhibit degenerative and autoimmune phenotypes similar to systemic lupus erythematosus.
AXL may act as an entry receptor for filoviruses and is used to identify Siglec 6+/Axl+ dendritic cells. Expression can be upregulated by TLR ligands (e.g., LPS, poly I:C). Soluble AXL is generated by proteolytic cleavage, and elevated plasma levels may indicate inflammation or cancer.
